What Jesus had to Say about Gun Control

“Peter, put away your sword.”

Sadly, Jesus never spoke directly to gun control. How could he? Like so many things we encounter today, guns weren’t present in Jesus’ day.

But violence was commonplace and it is no stretch to suggest that Jesus understood the ways it perpetuates itself. As MLK Jr. so eloquently said:

“Hate begets hate; violence begets violence; toughness begets a greater toughness. We must meet the forces of hate with the power of love.”

Or as Jesus challenges us, “Turn the other cheek…” and “Love one another.”

I’m not sure where Jesus would have fallen on gun control. After all, Peter was packing the first-century equivalent of heat before he is told to put it away. My fantasy Jesus would have an “F” rating from the NRA but things don’t work that way.

That said, it is very clear that Jesus would want his disciples to have no part in the fear mongering that sells so many weapons, and drives so many global conflicts, to this very day. After all, one of the things Jesus says more often than anything else is, “be not afraid”, or some version thereof.

To live fully in the Kingdom, we have to leave fear behind.
