The acts of listening and believing are too often conflated to the detriment of all involved. Pursuing justice and equality for those who have been often been denied it is why it is so important to hold the acts of listening and believing separately.

When Jesus refuses to be crucified
In their failure to publicly, and repeatedly, acknowledge that death (or a certain lack of popularity) is a likely cost of following Jesus, mainline denominations haven’t always honored the prophetic faithfulness of decisions to open doors for women, people of color, and other excluded groups. Accepting a narrative that closely aligns God’s blessing with numerical success makes such actions less likely, and stands in conflict to Jesus’ call to the cross.
